About Doug and Rich Road Financial
Comprehensive and Affordable Financial Planning
My Approach to Planning, Investing, and Retiring
Financial Licenses
I am a Series 65 licensed Investment Advisor Representative, which allows me to manage investments and offer financial planning advice for a fee. I am also licensed to work with Medicare. I am currently working toward my CFP certification (Certified Financial Planner).
Investment Strategy
I partner with Aptus Capital Advisors for access to their world-class, low-cost ETF portfolios—built with smart hedging features and rigorous research. For clients who want their investments to reflect their convictions, I can also build custom portfolios, including options that apply values-based screening (such as Christian-screened S&P 500 funds). For clients more than 5–10 years from retirement, I generally favor aggressive growth to capture long-term market upside. As retirement approaches, we methodically rebalance—adjusting risk, liquidity, income needs, and tax strategy. I use Nitrogen’s Riskalyze platform to analyze portfolio risk and ensure allocations stay aligned with each client’s goals.
Financial Planning Software
I use MoneyGuidePro to forecast plan growth and model retirement scenarios. It’s an industry-leading platform that gives us a clear baseline of your current finances and future goals, then lets us explore meaningful “what-if” decisions—college funding, buying a second home, major gifts, travel, spending changes, Social Security timing, and more. Its real strength is powerful analysis with simple, client-friendly visuals. MoneyGuidePro shows how each decision impacts your long-term plan without overwhelming you with complexity.
Tax Planning
For tax planning, I rely on Holistiplan—an industry-leading tool for modeling Roth conversions, capital-gains scenarios, tax-loss harvesting, and projected liabilities. It’s especially valuable when coordinating Social Security timing with investment distributions and managing the tax impact of drawing from pre-tax accounts like IRAs, 401(k)s, and future RMDs.
Insurance, Annuity, and Medicare Planning
I provide guidance on life insurance, long-term care, annuities, and Medicare planning. I can review any annuities you already own and evaluate how they fit into your overall strategy. While annuities can be helpful in certain situations, many carry high internal costs and shifting payout rules, so I use them selectively and only when they serve a clear purpose. Medicare is often far more confusing than it needs to be. I’ve taught seminars and helped hundreds of people navigate enrollment, avoid penalties, and choose the right supplemental coverage—especially during that critical first year. As the rules continue to change, I’m here to offer clear, personalized guidance so you can make confident decisions.
Financial planning gives you a roadmap that grows and changes with you, helping you make confident, well-informed decisions.
